I have a home network consisting of 3 PCs running XP Home. Recently I
had to do a full reinstall of XP on one of them (my kids' machine). The
PC has (exactly as previously) an admin user account (for me) and a
limited-access user account for the kids.

I set up the the My Documents folders in both accounts to be shared over
the network exactly as previously. However, the Kids' Documents folder
stubbornly remains inaccessible from other computers although I can see
it over the network. If I try to open that folder, I get the dreaded
Windows "Bong!", and a window warning me that Access is Denied.

I have been into the Properties of the problematic folder and tried
setting sharing to 'off' and then re-enabled it; doesn't help.

Any ideas? I'm completely stumped.
Thanks for the response.

XP File and Printer Sharing is completely knackered. Make sure the firewall on the computer hosting the folder has File and Printer Sharing set as an exception in Windows Firewall and allowed in whatever 3rd party firewall you have.
Checked, that's already OK.

Also, go to the network connection, right click and select properties, select TCP/IP protocol then Properties and under the WINS tab (I think - currently in Linux so can't check) should be "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/
IP". Enable that.
It was set to the default setting (as per my other PCs) but FWIW I made the change - no effect unfortunately.

But anyway - surely if the above suggestions were at the root of the problem, then I'd have NO sharing at all, would I? I'm able to share the printer and other folders on that machine, just not one particular one.

I had this problem with more than one directory. They were
marked as shared on B, but A couldn't access them.

I cured it by deleting the renegade folder, re-creating it
and making it shared. Try that. Don't forget to move your
files out first!

Good idea.... so I've just tried that, but it hasn't helped.

This is doing my head in. I've just tried enabling sharing on the root
directory (ie drive C) of this machine. From another machine I can
access this over the network, then I can go on to access C:\Documents
and Settings\; and within that folder I can open the folders "All
Users", and "Owner" but not "Kids" - access denied. I have separately
enabled sharing on the folders within "Kids" - ie "My Documents",
"Desktop", "Favorites" etc and "My New Test Folder", all of which are
inaccessible over the network.

So following Jim's principle I've just tried creating a new user account on the PC - "Kids2", and enabled sharing on its component folders. So now when I repeat trying network access from my own PC, I can see C:\Documents and Settings\Kids2 as well - and also the new share for "Kids2 Documents" under My Network Places. Yet both remain inaccessible!

This can't be happening, can it????
