Hi there,

I have a strange problem in my offices. We use a combination of TFT
and CRT monitors with our PC's. Over the last few months the TFTs
have started to die. They begin by flickering and eventually don't
display a signal at all even though they have power and a signal
(the power light remains illuminated). Sometimes they will display
an image momentarily but flicker back off after a second or so. I
have checked power management/energy saving features but they don't
seem to be a factor.

The monitors are of varying ages, different brands and from
different stores. Only TFT monitors are affected. I cannot find a
common reason for them to fail. I'm due to do a PAT test later this
month but I'm worried that this will kill the few remaining
monitors. Is this likely to be a problem with the mains electrical
supply,
interference or something else? We have two separate incoming mains
supplies but monitors have died regardless of which supply the ring
main was powered from.

I recently came across a strange virus that seemed to black out TFT
screens but not CRTs. The image of Windows was just about visible if
you looked hard (like remanence), perhaps it could be that.

I think someone pulled your chain. There is no way a virus could
manifest itself this way.

Seemed to me it did. I plugged in a crt screen which worked fine and
continually, ran the usual av and spyware stuff, one virus found, whose
name unfortunately I didn't note, and the problem then disappeared. All
connections OK, I checked thoroughly beforehand, so the physical
changing plugs shouldn't have come into it. Seems odd though I agree.
