I recently came across a strange virus that seemed to black out TFT
screens but not CRTs. The image of Windows was just about visible if you
looked hard (like remanence), perhaps it could be that.
I think someone pulled your chain. There is no way a virus could manifest
itself this way.
There is if the screen backlight can be turned off in software, like on
many
laptops. But yes, it's unlikely.
