No. The SATA spec includes hotswap, unlike IDE. Under IDE you'd need
a hotswap backplane, under SATA you don't necessarily. Not all boards
implement it, though. Those that do will allow you to safely remove
whilst powered up. Those that don't, won't. Note that the design of
the connectors is such that you can't electrically damage drive or
board by removing it - whether a motherboard or controller card allows
a drive to be successfully hotswapped is down to the individual
hardware.
A DL360 is a venerable piece of kit that I have a lot of affection for
(even HP haven't managed to screw it up since they swallowed Compaq -
I still get a weird feeling seeing HP logos on expensive real servers)
but would be overkill for the home unless your heating doesn't work
and you need white noise to keep the tinnitus at bay...!
You must also use the SATA power connectors if you plan on hot swapping.
The SATA drives with the old 4-pin molex power ports won't work.
Oh, are the SATA power connectors not electrically the same as Molex power
connectors - just with different sized/shaped pins? Mind you, I've never
seen a SATA drive with a Molex power connector.
