My wife is experiencing a problem using the local Scout group bubble
printer, printing from her personal computer. She gets e-mails posted to
her personal computer that have to be printed out at the Scouts expense.

Connection is via the usual USB cable, but when the cable is plugged into
the front USB socket on the computer, she gets the tones that denote that
a USB device has been un-plugged. (high to low). When it is unplugged, she
gets the tones low to high.

The computer accepts both of my memory sticks in the normal manner and the
printer pushes all the right buttons on my computer and has printed out
the document she wanted for the Scouts.

The printer leads appear to be OK, but I will try some switch cleaner on
them later tonight, but I doubt that this will clear the problem, as I
don't think that the solution is there.

My problem is I can't understand why the USB plugged and un plugged tones
are inverted. As it stands at the moment, I can't even re-install the
printer drivers, since when it gets to the point where I have to connect
the printer and switch it on, it obviously doesn't see it.

I assume from the title that you have directed this query to me, though I
can't think why. ;-)

Unfortunately, it is an entirely new one on me. I cannot even think of a
mechanism by which a USB port believes something has been disconnected when
you plug it in, because the detection mechanism is fixed. The memory sticks
which you report work are detected exactly the same way.

Grasping at the usual straws: I can only assume that something is severely
wrong with the printer's driver, but as you report, you have already
considered this and have been unable to re-install them. It is possible
that the printer's own USB port is faulty though I can't visualise how.
Have you tried the printer on another PC? What happens if the printer is
pugged into another USB port on the laptop?

As a last resort, have you tried to see if there is a later driver available
from the manufacturer's web site (would it be HP - perchance?).
