Sending SMTP Virginmedia email through different ISP?

I'm from the UK but currently travelling in the USA with a wifi-
enabled laptop, and am trying to use Outlook 2000 for my email (which
is through VirginMedia aka NTL). Although I'm receiving my POP3 email
OK, I'm having now joy in sending it - I need to log in via the web
and send it via webmail, which is a bit of a PITA obviously. AFAICS,
the reason my mail is failing to send is because VirginMedia's SMTP
mail server refuses to accept email coming from a different ISP - does
that sound about right? Seems to be the same issue with my secondary
account, supanet.com.
Not sure how to resolve this as I'm continually on different ISPs at
the moment... is there maybe another SMTP server which I can use from
anywhere without this problem?
Thanks
David
