I'm rebuilding the software applications on a win98SE machine after
formatting the hard drive.
The audio card is a Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1.
A useful feature of it's software is to record 'what you hear'.
This card provides for 5.1 sound, but all that is required is stereo as
there are only a pair of inexpensive speakers. Also IMO the software
package appears somewhat bloated.
The card also appears to require a couple of DOS entries for 'Viaudio'
and 'Set blaster=', in the Autoexec.bat. What's all that about?
Is there a modern card, perhaps by another manufacturer that will
provide stereo and record 'what you hear' and can be installed without
needing entries in autoexec.bat?
You can safely delete the entries in config.sys and autoexec.bat -
they're only there to provide legacy sound support to DOS programmes.
If you don't boot to DOS and need sound in DOS, you don't need the
entries.
