I have some old 8mm colour cine film that my parents made some 50
years ago, that I intend to get put onto DVD, but I anticipate it will
need editing. I am familiar with editing audio (WAV) files (removing
clicks, hiss, unwanted sections etc. The programme I use is GoldWave;
modestly priced and very versatile).
But I have no experience of handling video files, let alone editing
them. I presume editing them is not as simple as for audio files. Is
there a video editing programme out there that is fairly versatile,
easy to use and not expensive? (IIRC GoldWave was about GBP25, after a
preliminary trial period).

Quiet a lot
Average price is around £49 such as adobe Premier Elements, Ulead Media
studio, Vegas Media Studio and Pinnacle studio but there are free ones too
such Virtual Dub
PC World are currently knocking out Pinnacle Studio 10 for £29.95 at
present, and the Studio 10+ (Titanium edition) for £39.95*. The latter
comes with a whole host of add on features at present. These are very
capable editing packages that can be used for simple edits or complicated
projects including A roll/B roll edits, chroma keying, overlays etc. The
only down side is neither will work with Vista (does anything?). A little
bird tells me that Studio 11 (which will) is coming out at the end of this
month, but nothing has been formally announced yet.
*For the curious, Studio 10+ will also edit High Definition video (HDV and
AVCHD) and also handles Dolby Digital 5.1 sound (at extra cost).
