I have no idea if anything was installed or not - as soon as I logged in, ten
billion IE windows popped up and refused to close, a red triangle with a ! in
it appeared next to the clock and said I was infected with spyware and invited
me to click it to download some "malware sweeper", which I didn't do, and
after a minute or so the computer froze completely.
I fixed it by wiping it and reinstalling.
I should point out that the laptop was only three days old, was running Vista
Home Basic, and had been on the internet only once.
