So if I buy an OEM copy of XP (as I did) it's only valid on the first machine that I happen to install it on?
That's what the MS licence says. You can often get 'phone activation if you say the original mobo was defective and has been replaced, no guarantees though :-)
As it happens, I was able to activate in the normal automatic way: I tried it on the off-chance, and it worked, so evidently at least 180 days has elapsed since I activated it on the old PC. Now I need to make sure I remember wipe the disk on the old PC to stay legal!
The new PC is working fine now - ever since I replaced the LAN card with another one (the one out of the PC that I've just taken XP off). I think the same fault that was preventing the card get an IP address was also responsible for the intermittent hangs. Certainly the PC has rebooted perfectly each and every time as I've been installing the XP and AVG updates.
I like it when I can build a PC out of spare parts - I must have Womble blood in me!
I still need to transplant everything into a different case becase this PC has one of those stupid U-shaped cases where the top and both sides are all one piece of metal. They are a right pain when you have to keep removing and replacing them, whereas a case with a single side panel that slides off is much easier.
My last computer (pre last Christmas) never had any side panels on it. I ran like that for 2 years, as I used it to hang hard drives and CD/DVD drives on it to see if they worked, or to check what spec they were.
