About 2 years ago I got hold of some speech recognition software. I
then went and bought a set of headphones with a microphone attached.
However When I plugged everything up and tried to set the software
up, I was told that the computer did not recognise my voice. It
turned out that the collected audio was too low to train the software
to recognise what I was saying. (I tried windows sound recorder and
it was very low level audio.)

I put everything away, for future use. Since then, both my wife's and
my own computer have been up-graded. Now, when I try the headphones
on my wifes computer I get a good level of sound from win recorder.
On my computer, I am still stuck with a low level of audio.

Any thoughts anyone?

Check for Mic Boost: open the Windows Sound Mixer (a loudspeaker in
the system tray near the clock) and see if there is an Advanced
button beside the Mic slider (you may need Options | Advanced menu
item to be ticked). When you press that button, there may be a Mic
Boost tick-option.

I was about to say that but, for the OP, I suppose that beforehand he has put the Mic input level up high in thesame sound mixer and also, if it could be, that his microphone is plugged into the Mic socket on his sound card and not theLine socket that some cards have.

I checked and tried all that. No way forward.

What I don't understand is that my wife's computer works fine, but my two last ones are crap for audio.
