Help needed with SATA plus IDE hard drive set-up

I've just received a Maxdata PC from eBuyer with a SATA II hard drive and
wish to add my old Seagate 120GB IDE drive to the system as well. I've
connected it to the middle connection on the IDE cable for the DVD drive
and messed about with the jumper settings but cannot get it to work
properly. I've had the machine boot from it, loading up the XP install
from my previous machine, and I've had it boot to the new drive loading
Vista with full access to the old drive, but the machine always pauses on
boot-up first with this message:
"No IDE Master HDD detected
Press F1 to resume".
Can someone advise me how to properly set the drive up so I can switch
between the two drives as boot devices in the BIOS and keep full access to
the non-boot drive?
Thanks in advance.
