How do you mean 'use programs'? If you're not boting into ME then I
doubt that any of your programs are going to work under XP by just
running the executable from within XP.
You might want to dual boot instead, but I'd look at getting these
programs off, or reinstalling updated versions on XP or overcoming
whatever problems you're having.
Over the ten year life of the old computer, I accumulated programs
from a number of sources. Those for which I have installation discs or
for which downloads are available, I've re-installed on the new
computer. Other programs I've copied over directly via a memory stick
and they appear to run quite satisfactorily (this newsreader is one
such), without even changing the 'compatibility mode' setting. But a
couple that came with the old computer and that I use fairly often
don't work quite as they used to.
It was originally my intention to install the HDD from the old
computer into the new one and re-format it, as it's only a couple of
years old. But as these two programmes won't run properly when simply
copied over, I imagined that if I left them alone on the old drive,
they would still work when it was moved. If it turns out that they
won't, as you rather imply, then I'll revert to plan A, re-format the
disc and find equivalent programs that will do the same job.
I don't want to get into dual booting. Too complicated for me :-)
Dual booting with separate drives is quite easy.
Typically you just go into the bios setup and choose the hard drive boot
order.
On my Asus motherboard I can hit F8 during the post and then choose which
drive to boot from.
I hadn't realised it was that easy! I'd noticed on my opening screen
that it does say [F8] Boot device, but as I'm still learning I hadn't
taken any notice of it. I might even give it a try when I've got the
old disc installed. Thank you.
(as the default).
