Now, to go back to the beginning: I first mentioned my errant USB drive
in response to Ed Cryer's plea for some way to tell which of his USB
ports is 1 or 2. So far as I know, the only way to do this - apart from
measuring actual data transfer rates - is to acquire a drive with
precisely the fault mine suffers from.
I thought I had answered that, but on checking my post, I note that I
didn't. If you refer to my post of 9:46 AM on the 20th March under this
thread, you will see that I describe the various root hubs and their
'power' tab under properties from the 'Device Manager'. Once you have
identified which root hub is the USB2 root hub (usually the bottom one),
opening its properties and selecting the 'power' tab will show you all
the devices which are enumerated as USB2.
Boy, were you busy that morning. But I couldn't find anything timed
9:46. Eventually I tracked down the message to find that my newsreader
(Turnpike) tagged it as 8:46. Must be down to the change to summertime
last Sunday.
The problem, surely, is relating the root hub listed in the device
manager to the actual socket on the front or back, or laptop side, of
your computer. You could do that by having some USB device like a flash
drive and plugging it into each socket in turn, then identifying the
root hub it's connected to in device manager.
