I'll go along with that as well.
When I first started doing digital photos, I used to back up to a CD
until the day came that my computer wouldn't read it. I had lost all the
photos on it. These days I back up to 3 CDs and regularly check that all
3 can be read, This way, if one fails I still have 2 others to try. The
likelihood of all 3 failing at the same time is low ...
Don't count your chickens ... believe me it will happen sooner or
later if you insist on trusting you data to a totally unreliable system
such as compact disc.
IME, CD-Rs vary wildly. I have had no name bulk disks that still hold their
data after several years. I also have had several brand name disks that
have suffered from severe amnesia after a few months (including one that was
readable one month, but not one month later).
