What are folks opinions of backups for a medium sized business?
I'm wondering about the cost-effectiveness/reliability of tapes, and
thinking it'd be perhaps better to get a second 'backup' server running
along side that takes the data off at regular intervals. Perhaps with a
couple of HDD caddies so disks can be rotated.
We already have remote backup, so things are fine (fingers crossed!) in
case of theft/fire etc.. We could also (if a second server was used with
caddies) take drives off site.
Price-wise per GB, HDD's win by a long shot. What opinions do people
have re: tapes/more hard drives?
Data involved with this site is 50GB.
I have a tape drive backup going but because it needs the tape
changing on a daily basis and I'm not there every day it isn't
adequate. I just leave the same tape in and pop a fresh one in weekly.
Daily data backups are done overnight to a spare PC in another
building using freeware backup software. I feel a lot more secure with
this than tape. The software would not be suitable for you as it uses
zipfiles limited to 2 Gb. Okay for us as we backup separate folders
and none of them are that big or ever likely to get that big.
One thing I do do is image the root drive on the server on a regular
basis and after every software update. Touch wood I haven't needed it
yet but I know someone who did.
