How to shut down with remote desktop

I sometimes connect to my home pc from my laptop when I am working from a remote connection. When I am finished, I want to shutdown my home PC so that it powers off (I can reach someone by phone if I need it turned on again).

However the start menu has no "turn off computer" option when I am connected and attempts to use the DOS shutdown command haven't worked either. Does anyone know how to do this?
