Indeed : I heard of a lecturer at an Ancient University, in an Ancient
lecture theatre, who one day brought in his wife's well-used sewing
machine, plugged it into the ancient bench socket, and received 240 V AC
off the machine, to his displeasure.

Explanation was, IIRC, that the bench, without previous perceptible
problem, had been wired with live and neutral transposed; and the
machine, without previous perceptible problem, had been wired with
neutral and earth transposed.

Nothing wrong with that; standard practice nowadays. (If they
connect the earth at all, that is.)
