SWMBO has a Panasonic Lumix digital camera that takes both still photosThey are actually Motion JPG and .mov is the extension for QuickTime which
and
AVI movies. The only snag is that it names the movie files with a ".mov"
extension.
If I rename these files to ".avi" they play in Windows Media Player in XP,
but with their original filename they won't play. Selecting the file and
"Open with" to load it into WMP produces first a message saying that the
file type is not recognized and then a message saying that WMP cannot play
the file and that it must be either corrupt or in an unknown format (which
it clearly isn't, as it plays after renaming it to .avi).
I've tried associating the ".mov" extension with the "Video clip" file
type
(same association as for ".avi") and opening it by simply double clicking
-- this way there are no error messages and WMP appears to load the file,
but doesn't play it (display area remains black and play controls are
greyed out).
Oddly (and perhaps significantly) this works in Win2k.
Does anyone know how to disabuse XP's WMP of the notion that it can't play
these mis-named AVIs?
Renaming the files is no big deal, of course, but persuading SWMBO that
this is something she could learn to do herself in the future is another
matter ...
Cheers,
Daniel.
was no doubt supplied with your camera for Viewing them. There no misnamed
as AVI covers a vast amount of file formats
.
