ghost in the machine

I have a brand new computer that seems to have a ghost in the machine.

I can switch it off by shutting down windows XP professional and it goes
off. I don't switch it off at the wall.

Then, I can be walking past it - its on a wooden floor - and it will
suddenly spring into life and boot up.

If I switch it off at the wall after shutting down, as soon as I switch the
plug on it bursts into life and boots up and I haven't even gone near the
"on'" button.

Can anyone help with why this is happening please.

Thanks.
