: Non.
: Seriously. It's all a waste of money.
:
: Anyone using common sense, getting their downloads from legitimate
: sources, patching XP as needed and using a Firewall is OK. Hell, if
: you're behind a NAT router, you don't even need to put a firewall on
: your PC as the router does it all for you unless you manually go in
: opening ports here and there.
:
: I've run RC1 of Vista and because it does things properly, the need for
: security software is only there for the completely stupid who will
: blindly click Allow when the OS is screaming at them THIS IS MALWARE.
: Even then, it'll only infest the user account and not the Windows
: install. Vista is so better that AV companies are having to try and
: hack into it to get their products to work.
:
: IE6 is quite secure, IE7 even moreso. Yes your favourite Spyware
: utililty will pick up something but it'll be nothing more harmless than
: a tracking cookie. The fact they're reporting legitimate cookies from
: websites shows how desperate they're getting to prove they're needed.
:
: Chances are if your ISP is a decent one, it performs a virus scan on
: your incoming e-mail. Certainly Hotmail, Google, Yahoo and most top
: tier webmail providers do. The amount of e-mail borne viruses has
: dropped significantly. You're at more of a risk of phishing than being
: infected.
:
: I have NOD32 running. When I can be arsed, which is about twice a year,
: I'll run a Spyware scanner which usually picks up a few cookies and
: that's it. If I've cleaned out the Internet Cache beforehand, it
: doesn't get those.
:
:
: Not been infected and I've only had a couple of warnings in the last
: couple of years when going to a dodgy webpage which has tried to foist
: something onto me.
:
: People who have PCs infested with all kinds of *** have 99.999% of
: the time done it themselves deliberately despite all the warnings.
:
Thats pretty much spot on, although i would say the addition of a free
firewall like Zone Alarm can assist you with stopping programmes calling
home if you don't want them to.
