Before attempting any change, I checked the user's manual and found that my
monitor supports VESA flicker free modes including 85Hz refresh rate, but is
set at 60Hz. However, when I altered the setting to 85Hz, clicked OK, the
screen went blank and after the 15 second timeout, reappeared with a return
to 60Hz. I tried altering the setting twice more with the same result.
The flickering is not too bad, but after working at the computer for
any length of time, it can become annoying. I now wonder if my monitor,
bought with my previous Windows98 PC, is too old for WindowsXP.

It's likely windows is using the 'Default Monitor' driver to select the
various parameters to run your monitor at 85Hz. If you let us know what
make and model your monitor actually is perhaps we'll be able to find a
more suitable driver.
