Before attempting any change, I checked the user's manual and found
that my monitor supports VESA flicker free modes including 85Hz
refresh rate, but is set at 60Hz. However, when I altered the
setting to 85Hz, clicked OK, the screen went blank and after the 15
second timeout, reappeared with a return to 60Hz. I tried altering
the setting twice more with the same result. The flickering is not
too bad, but after working at the computer for any length of time,
it can become annoying. I now wonder if my monitor, bought with my
previous Windows98 PC, is too old for WindowsXP.
That explains the flickering: 60Hz is a bit low for most people.
It's more likely to be the video card than the monitor, I think: maybe
the video card is old and can't support a higher refresh rate at the
resolution you want?
