Can someone give me a definitive answer as to what constitutes pin 1
of a serial port at the computer, looking into a horizontally mounted
female receptacle from the outside.
The Web comes up with such descriptions as 'looking at the pin
insertion plane' and 'looking into the plug', whatever that may
mean. Pin insertion planes mean nothing to me, only the soldering
side and the other side.
I'm fairly sure pin 1 is top left on both 15- and 9-pin
horizontally mounted sockets (on the computer), as these seem to give
the most reasonable voltages at the other end of a serial cable, but
I have been unable to confirm this via Google.
Take a magnifying glass and take a look at the plug/socket and you
should be able to see the pin numbers stamped alongside.
