Problems with TalkTalk Broadband - HELP!!!

I've just suscribed to this so-called 'free' bradband service from
TalkTalk. I've the modem, the filters and it's after my 'go live'
date. Everything has happened a month and a half quicker than
expected.

I followed the instructions connecting up the broadband and I'm pretty
sure I got it all connected up correctly. To simplify the process, I
disabled all the telephone extension lines in the house and just used
to main telephone inlet, connecting my filter to it and one of the
phones to the filter along with the modem cable. Problem items such
as Sky box and second phone were eliminated from the equation.

My first problem was that I got a signal of strength approximately 576
Mbits / s. My second problem was that after an initial burst of
activity, although the broadband link was still 'connected', all
activity ceased with data no longer being sent or received.

To get it going again, I had to disconnect and reconnect or reboot the
computer then reconnect.

Any help that might get things going. What effects will online
traffic and distance from exchange have? Anyone else specifically had
problems with TalkTalkbroadband?

I'm new to broadband and have not used broadband on my current
connection before (this no transfer from another provider). My
previous Freeserve / Wanadoo / Orange connection was only Pay as You Go
dial-up.
