The first thing to do might be to remove any unknown devices (plug
your phone in to make them appear (or google for how to make non
present devices appear)).

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Environment
Create a new value chain DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
and give it the value 1.

From then on in the control panel/system/hardware/device Display menu
you'll have a new option, 'show hidden devices'

I just knew that some kind soul would oblige.

You can thank jeuf on fr.comp.os.ms-windows who posted this very trick
just a couple of days ago. I just translated it for you.

Odd. I don't have any such key; indeed, a registry search doesn't find
any instance of DEVMGR. But in the View menu of Device Manager I have
'Show hidden devices'. That's in Win XP Pro.

Id doesn't have to be in the registry. It works if you make
DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES an environment variable and give it a value
of '1'.

In fact, I didn't know about the registry method.

And I don't have that in my environment either.
