Can you post a link to a screen capture that shows the problem.

Maybe he isn't knowingly using the "large fonts" feature (Display
Properties | Appearance | Font Size) but he could have altered the
sizes of individual text items.

Check the Advanced tab on Display Properties | Appearance and look
at the Font Size for following parameters. On my PC, all these are
set to 8. Active Title Bar
Icon
Inactive Title Bar
Menu
Message Box
Palette Title
Selected Items
Tooltip

Also look at the Display Properties | Settings | Advanced | General
page: DPI should probably be Normal (96 dpi).

Yap It could be a windows theme that he is using

I don't have access to his machine until after the weekend now, but I
can promise you he isn't using large fonts. His DPI is set to normal,
all the individual text items are normal and there are no themes
running. Please bear in mind this problem was transferred from Windows
'98 to Windows XP when I formatted and installed from fresh.

So with this in mind, what else could it be?

Sorry, I missed the bit where you said you'd formatted the PC and done a
fresh installation of XP. So it's not a carry-over from the old installation
of Windows.

I wonder if the graphics card has a problem and/or if the graphics drivers
(both for Win98 and XP) have a problem.

What happens if the PC is started in Safe Mode (press F8 as initial Windows
logo and scrolling blue bar appear)? Safe Mode should use generic VGA
drivers instead of the proprietary ones for the graphics card. Does this
make a difference.

PS: I very much doubt whether it's the keyboard that's at fault ;-)
