I have a machine I need to boot from CD to fix a busted installation
of Windows. The BIOS (ami bios) helpfully tells me to hit DEL to
enter the setup screens, but (tried two keyboards) it isn't
recognised, while Ctrl-Alt-Del is.
You mean ctrl-alt-del is recognised when booting, before Windows loads?
If so, most peculiar, but I suspect not and that you are using a USB
keyboard which isn't recognised at that point. Try a keyboard with a PS2
plug or a usb/ps2 adapter.
