I was considering buying a dell desktop for my wife. They don't seem
to have an option to purchase with a wireless card installed, but
instead offer a usb 2 wireless adapter. Would this be as good?
Thanks for any advice, from a mac user (sorry!)
The only comments I'll make are:
- My Netgear WG111T is CRAP: it loses contact with the router fairly
frequently despite showing good signal strength, requiring me to unplug and
replug it; sometimes the laptop fails to recognise it as a valid USB device;
the laptop sometimes locks solid (no keyboard, mouse, sound). I've had
reports from two of my customers that their PCs (one a laptop, one a
desktop) occasionally lock solid in the same way. I would never recommend
anyone buying this model (I got it "free" with my router; my customers
bought their WG111Ts before I became involved).
- Being an external device, it is very prone to getting bent at the USB port
if you plug it directly into the socket; if you use the extension flylead,
that takes a lot of wear and tear at the PC end of the cable - my cable now
has an intermittent contact. This is much less of an issue for you because
your PC is a desktop so there won't be the wear and tear on the
cable/socket.
