Thanks for the replies.
The problem is that all the software solutions rely on the motherboard
and/or CPU being fitted with temperature sensors. The Dimension 8300
doesn't appear to have any, I can find no mention in the BIOS settings
or manual, and MBM flags the system as "not supported".
So what I am looking for is something like an ISA board that can be
plugged in and which provides a hardware interface for a couple of temp
sensors and a way of reading them.
In that case you might as well use Dtemp, the temperature of your hard
drives would be as good an indicator of overheating as a sensor somewhere on
a PCI card I would have thought.
