The landlord of my local real ale pub has recently got broad band and is
having a problem getting on line. The computer refuses to go on line.

There are so many variables here that it's hard to know where to start. Are
we dealing with cable (supplied by NTL or Telewest) or ADSL (supplied by
somone else, not necessarily BT)? Assuming it *is* ADSL:

Has the line been activated yet? It usually takes about a week from the
order until ADSL is ready to use

Has your landlord connected microfilters to every telephone socket in the
place?

Is your landlord trying to use an ADSL modem (usually supplied by the ISP)
or something else? If he's not using an ADSL modem (or router), he won't be
able to connect.

Is the modem connected to the right socket on the microfilter? This must be
the small US style socket, not the bigger BT jack

Is the modem connected to the PC properly? This is probably a USB cable
unless it's a router in which case it will be a network cable

Is the modem switched on? Quite a few USB modems don't have a power switch
so this might be controlled by the PC

Did he run the software that came with the modem? This installs the drivers
needed for it to work

If it's BT Broadband or BT Yahoo (you'll know this from the CD), you can
repair the connection by right clicking the pair of arrows in the system
tray and picking the option from there. There's also a dialler that checks
the settings and repairs them when you try to connect

It isn't worth using the network setup wizard as that can only set up a type
of connection that isn't used in the UK (PPPoE).

Once you've checked these steps, there's some more to follow at
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.asp?faq=troubleshooting.

I'm used to fixing most ADSL connection problems (last week I was playing
with an ADSL router that was supposed to failover to ISDN if the connection
failed, but didn't). If your landlord still has problems, try to find out a
few more details such as exactly how it doesn't manage to get online. Does
it connect (as if it's trying to dialup) but he then can't browse web pages?
Does it refuse to connect and comes back with an invalid username or
password error? Does everything other than email work?
