Re: Wireless laptop

Set the thing up with the PC connected to the modem via Ethernet
cable. Then replace the cable with the USB gadget, to get the
wireless working (both ends same manufacturer) without encryption. Then
see if you can get the laptop to join in. Then add encryption
(or any fool can join in). Then, if the PC is going to be near the
modem anyway, drop back to using an Ethernet cable, as the USB bus
can be a bit too busy for other peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc).

Use the 3com software (or the XP native software) to check for other
wireless setups nearby, and change to an unused channel if necessary.
Near me there are five networks all babbling on channel 11, plus mine.

Thanks Philip.

So...if I was to take the laptop out and about with me I could get onto
other wireless networks if they were a bit lax with their passwords?

I know this is nothing new but I've never thought about taking the laptop
out to see if there's anything of any interest near me!
