Clean reinstall of Windows XP

I've acquired a second-hand computer. Somebody has tried to install XP on top of ME, messed it up and given it to me. It works well enough, only a few years old.
I want to do a clean install of XP Pro SP1. I have the system cd and boot floppies.
What do I have to do before the install to get rid of this situation?
When you switch it on, it gives you a choice of booting ME or XP. The hard drive is 20Gb; ME in C partition, 17.5Gb, FAT32, Healthy (System); XP in D, 1.30 Gb, NTFS, Healthy (Boot).
I'd like just a C partition (all 20Gb), all NTFS, just XP Pro, to which I will then add SP2.
