Re: Connecting 2 PCs via Ethernet

All good advice. Most PCs are configured to pick up an IP address
automatically (from a DHCP server) but if nothing else (modem, router, ISP)
is connected, you'll need to put them in manually (remember to restore the
previous setting afterwards). I'd suggest 192.168.x.y and 192.168.x.z
where x, y and z are numbers in the range 1 to 254. You'll also need to put
in a subnet mask: use 255.255.255.0.

Share at least one folder on one machine, and have the other connect to it.
If the usernames and passwords (I think you HAVE to have a password set for
this in XP) are the same, then you may get a seamless connection.
Otherwise, it's easiest to "Map a Network Drive" from Windows Explorer's
"Tools" menu. That has an option to "connect using a different user name" -
enter the details for the remote machine.

You can get hung up over permissions, so you may want to share a folder
within the "Shared Documents" area. Note that there can be permissions
locally on the sharing machine, and also externally on the share, and they
won't necessarily be the same unless you make them so.

Watch out for firewall problems too - depending what you have installed, you
may need to add these details to your "Trusted Zone":
Network: 192.168.x.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
.... or just disable it for a while!
I don't think the XP firewall will intervene.
