I just got one of those external hard drive enclosures and I will be fitting an 80gb hard drive into it but I would like to know if I have to format the new hard drive first so that I can back up files etc. on to it.

I did just that recently with a 200Gb drive. I use WinXP, formatted in NTFS, one single partition.
And it seems to work through the USB1.1 just as fast as the 2.0
