Some domain controlling bodies (eg Nominet for .uk) will allow direct
registration but it's inevitably much cheaper to use a registration agent.
OneandOne.co.uk are cheap for some; while liquidsix.com are very good value
for hosting packages. Relatively few agencies were offering
"pre-registration" (no guarantee!) services the last time I looked.
GoDaddy.com were one of the first.
