System sounds gone

Hello all
Can anyone help ?
My friend has a Tiny computer, XP Home, SP2.
Two or three days ago,all system sounds stopped playing,
Windows open, close, everything. Everything was fine until then,
no software added, no changes at all.
All other sounds eg. Games, are fine, just no system
sounds. Any suggestions ?
Checked all system sounds from control panel and previewed them,
all ok.
