Swapping HD ?

Apologies,
I expect this has been asked dozens of times.

I have a pc with a 40Gig HD which has xp pro on it.

I want to fit a bigger HD and ditch the original so i need to copy the
old disk to the new,make the new one bootable and only have this one
disk on the system.

What do i need to do?

Also,my MOBO is slightly older,if i buy a sata pci controller card and
use a sata drive for the above operation,can i expect to be able to
boot directly off the sata drive or will i have to have a floppy in
the A;/ drive at bootup to point the mobo bios the right way to the
sata card?
