Re: Exploding CD

Just had my first encounter with an exploding CD.

Built a good spec gaming PC for a customer, it was only one week old when I get a call.

Hi my new machine has gone 'BANG'

Turns out that a CD had shattered while in the drive. Now I've heard of this happening but have never come across it. The CD was not new, maybe it's gone brittle or had a small crack or flaw, who knows but it destroyed a brand new DVD/RW drive (next time he will use the DVD ROM drive to play his games, less expensive to repair)

Has anyone else seen this before/

It has happened to me twice. The first time, it took out the CD re writer. The second time, I got away with it.

The first time, it took out my scanner software CD and I had to get my daughter to down-load and send me the sw. I was on dial up and it would have taken me all night to down load it myself :-(

The second time it happened, I just lost the CD. The identical re-writer, that I bought to replace the original is still going strong.

Now, I make a back-up of all my CD software 3 times.

I put the CD break up down to the vibration. The more the vibration, the more likely that the CD will explode
