I had a very similar problem recently. You don't say what Firewall you're
using, if any. I have a wireless router, the desktop connects with a usb
cable, the laptop with a wireless card. In my ignorance, I was also trying
to set up a lan through ethernet ports on both machines.
After a couple of very frustrating days, trying just about every
combination of the networking wizard and not being able to get either to
talk to each other, I finally took a bit of a deeper look at the firewalls
on each - I had Norton Internet Security installed. There's a networking
option in NIS, and when I ran the wizard, it found the IPs of the router
and the 'other' pc and bingo, they were talking to each other through the
wireless router. The 'direct' ethernet lan wasn't needed at all.
I reckon networking is close to witchcraft and the occult.....
