I have an old HP printer with a parallel interface. I connected it up
with a USB convertor. Windows recognised it, I did some test prints,
and all was fine.

I then disconnected it to clean it up.

When I reconnected, windows would not print to it. Eventually, I
reconnected the USB cable to a different USB port, Windows decided it
was a new device, reinstalled the drivers, and lo and behold it's
working again!

If I dare to switch the PC off, am I going to have the same problems,
and why is it so flakey?

ISTR you needed to boot with your parallel devices powered on or they
wouldn't work - probably a similar sort of initialisation going on with
the 1284/USB bridge.
