Building a 'throwback' computer

I'm aware that I might sound like a lunatic or something, and it's not
far off the mark, but I am wanting to make a partial retreat from the
modern world but I do need a computer, to watch films on, listen to
music and do wordprocessing. I would love to just have Windows 98 here
but I imagine I'd very hard pushed to find hardware that will work
100% with it if bought new. I've just been reading about FreeDos as
well. Linux I have to rule out because the high tailor-ability of it
invokes my very exhausting OCD. Changing this and tweaking that...

One online shop is currently offing a load of HP monitors that have
apparently sat in the HP warehouse since 17 inch crt monitors were a
norm and it would be great if there were some untouched base units/
motherboards that were limited enough to keep me away from the
internet. I have quite severe internet addiction, many hours of
pointless surfing. I could succumb to Prozac or hospital but I would
like to help myself as I'm attempting to in other areas of life.

Sorry this isn't too much fun and far from your Christmas spirit but I
would appreciate any suggestions vis a vis the hardware/OS that would
give me my entertainment/creativity outlet while keeping me safely
back in the late 1990s. (To be honest, I think what I've 'got' is just
a very extreme form of what many people feel nowadays and am not sure
it isn't worse, in some ways, to only have 'it' moderately. I just
know I was more creative and lively when computers/operating systems
were simpler and didn't look flash. I think I have just got hooked on
a load of old b*ll*cks and kind of need to remove it as extremely as a
recovering alcoholic would remove drink else I'll be forever slipping
into time-wasting habits.)

In short I am asking if ideally there is a motherboard/cpu/ ram limit
that can be bought new to suit Windows 98 or FreeDos. I am currently
using a self-built AsRock AND68-17d with an AMD 3ghz dual core cpu and
4gb or ram, 320gb SATA hard drive and Windows 7, all of which I
imagine I'll be eBayifying soon. I have got two second hand single
core AMD processors here, one of which I know works, and an 80gb IDE
hard drive but ideally if I need a single core processor I'd get one
new for maximum life of the machine.
