It's only the DDR3 5670s that go that low, usually, and they're much closer to the 5570 in benchmark numbers. Benchmarked 5670s are all DDR5.

That's the sort of thing I need advice on ... are you talking about the
majority of current games, here, or just the most demanding?

I use a 5670 512mb GDDR5 in my budget games system as its ok, I can play BF3 at medium settings at 1368*768 with an average frame rate above 40. As long as you play games at a relatively low resolution the card does not perform to bad. Its about the same as the old nvidia 9800GT which was no slouch in its day.
