I was wondering if anyone could point me to a more appropriate group for
this sort of thing - I looked at uk.net.web.authoring but it seemed
pretty dead apart from the spam.

what did you want to know?

Ok, I'm pretty much a beginner at this, have arranged a webdomain and
hosting package. I have a few questions.

I have a number of directories under /home/[domain]. Some are self
explanatory, but I do not know what all of them are for. A list: etc,
mail,
public_ftp, public_html, tmp, www. Presumably mail stores my mail folders,
and public_html and www stores my website, what about the rest?

There are lots of directories and files in the www directory already.
Presumably these are the ones created by the host to advertise their
services should I delay putting a page up there. Which do I need to keep
and
which can be deleted? A list: _private (directory) _vti_bin (directory),
_vti-cnf (directory), _vti-log (directory), _vti-pvt (directory), cgi-bin
(directory), css (directory), img (directory), _vti_inf.html, index.php,
host.swf, postinfo.html, sifr-addons.js, sIFR-print.css, sIFR-screen.css,
sifr.js.

I upload my files to the public_html directory. They are mirrored in the
www
directory and vice versa. What is the purpose of this?

I intend to create a number of semi private areas to the website - areas
that I can use for my own exclusive purpose or direct people to if they
have
the correct path, but would not be ordinarily discovered by browsing to
www.[mydomain].com. If I put an index.html file in the folder, then it is
my
understanding that a directory listing of that folder cannot be obtained -
correct?

If I make a website consisting of a number of linked pages and put them in
the webroot (public_html/www) directory, so that the path is
www.mydomain.com/page1.html then some time later I wish to move them to a
separate folder so that I can have in effect a subdomain organised as
www.mydomain.com/site1/page1.html I would need to manually update all of
the
html weblinks to point to the new locations in each other page in the
series
with the extra bit - is there any software where I can build a site and
have
all this updating of page locations done automatically?

Sorry its a lot, but I am just starting out here.

Most good webhosting will have loads of relevant info readily
available on their site or in your account. Also those with good
tech support will often be very helpful.

There are a lot of tutorials and other stuff on http://www.htmlgoodies.com/
and other major reference sites such as http://sitepoint.com

Particularly if you operate a business website and might want to/have to
change your website hosting, then it is more prudent to buy your own
domains from somewhere like http://123-reg.co.uk and change the
nameservers settings in your domain control panel to those provided
by your webhosting provider. If you change hosting, then just change
the nameservers to the new settings. There can be times when hosts
are reluctant to release free and transferred domains to new hosts!

You will find http://filezilla-project.org/index.php free FTP very handy ;0)

If you rename the directory of a site, or move it to a new directory, you
will most probably break it. This is because you will have changed the
"paths" and urls.

It pays to get the hang of your webhosting control panel ( eg CPanel).
Beware of using the easy-peasy one-click install scripts as they are often
outdated, buggy and insecure or trial versions. Best to check on the actual
script home site for updates and issues.

Lot to learn and do ... no easy quickfixes unless you pay for someone to do
it all.
