Does anyone know if the controller on one of these motherboards can have
one SATA and one SAS at the same time?
Depends whether you have the platinum version or not. The Platinum can.

Yes I have the platinum version... sorry should have mentioned that.

Do you have the SAS drive plugged into one of the red SATA headers? (you must).

Yes.. I didn't think the RAID utility would see the drive if it wasn't.

Have you installed the Promise driver?

Yes the driver is installed. hen I attach two SATA drives there are two showing in Device Manager as Promise 1+0 JBOD SCSI Disk Device. When I remove one SATA and attach a SAS drive only one Promise... appears in Device Manager but the drive is powered on and appears correctly in the RAID util at bootup.

I was given 4 SAS drives which were removed from a server only two days ago, and all 4 are working fine....in the RAID util I can delete the data on the drive, remove it and re-assign it, so afaik it's still working fine.

Are you saying you've configured a SATA and a SAS drive in the same raid (jbod) array?

I don't think it's an array as such... not like RAID 5... with the two SATA drives in JBOD mode they both appear in Windows as separate drives and are completely separate. I did the same with the SAS drive thinking (hoping) it would be the same.

Something is wrong there, Windows should see a jbod RAID setup as one logical volume. It's not true RAID (just a bunch of disks..ho..ho) and has no advantages other than convenience. So with two jboded sata drives Winders should have seen one volume, I don't think you can then substitute a SATA drive for a SAS drive in that setup.(not 100% sure on that, it may vary from controller to controller)

Doh, I mean substitute a SATA drive for a SAS drive of course, must be bedtime. :)
