For last few days I've been getting spasmodic, short bursts of noise
from my speakers. This is with no music programs in use. Just while
working in various other applications. From 1 - 3 seconds, each
session itself being the sort of noise I'd expect from say a loose
connection or nearby car ignition noise. Can't see/hear any evidence
for either of those. Several hours might pass before a repetition.
It is your power supply about to fail. It will make this noise when it is
becoming overloaded. Sometimes it will do it when the CPU is at 100%.
It's a common mistake people make when upgrading a PC and using
their existing case and power supply. Some ratings on PSUs are wrong.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I might isolate it please? Could it
be some other program or XP Pro service somehow affecting the sound
system?
It isn't that. It is only when applications put a load on the CPU which
then increases power consumption.
This is a Quad Core Q9450 2.66 GHz, 4 GB. Onboard sound card, 6
channel cinema sound; Creative Inspire A500 - 5.1 Surround speakers.
Not sure if it helps diagnosis, but FWIW, these are the entries in
Device Manager under
Sound, video and game controllers
It will not help! RF interference is not that common as cases are shielded,
power supplies reject interference and so do most leads connecting to the
computer. It is unlikely that your sound card is picking up any
interference.
The problem with phones is causes by the speakers picking up the
interference. So that will make a noise you would recognise instantly.
What you will notice next is that as the power supply starts to break
down further, the sound or crackling will increase when you start to
move the mouse and the computer will lock on you or switch off.

Thanks all. I do indeed have a newish mobile phone (actually a Pocket
PC, an HTC Touch Pro 2 running Windows Mobile 6.1) which I've been
keeping on the shelf a couple of feet away from the main
speaker/control unit. The 'Phone' connection is always on (while the
unit is in standby mode), but I try to keep the 'Data Connection' off,
to avoid unwanted (costly) internet connection (for which I use my
PC's wi-fi connection). As a first step I'll move the PPC well away
and see if that stops the noise.
I had 3 other bursts a little while ago, with gaps of 17 minutes and
about 50 seconds respectively. After listening more carefully, 'noise'
is perhaps the wrong word. It does sound rather like a signal of some
sort, very fast morse code or telemetry or something like that (sounds
remembered from my youthful short-wave listening).
After reading the replies from Mark and Adrian I switched my PPC on
and was surprised to see that 'Data Connection' was ON. I'm 99% sure I
switched it off this morning, and haven't used the phone since.
I do hope it's not the power supply, as I specified 550W when I bought
this PC from MESH 18 months ago. Mind you, I was disappointed to
discover that this case (an ATX Midi Tower) has no easily removable
covers (everything is screwed on). So I've never been inside it and
I'm worried that it may be accumulating dust, especially as I rarely
switch it off.
