There is a technical issue peeping out from behind the curtains,
though, and I wonder that I haven't seen any discussion of it.

I run my Windows systems with Windows Automatic Update turned OFF. The
reasoning is partly that I can choose to download updates when it suits
me, and that I can delay downloading updates until they are shown to be
'good'. I can also blacklist appalling crap like IE7.

That's a valid point. I do likewise with win2k and watch for the
comp.security.announce postings to remind me whether it's worth trying a
manual update.

However, for winXP, it's better to select the third option down (check
for but don't download or install updates). This puts paid to the
windows security centre nags and alerts you to when updates become
available for download. This leaves you fully in charge of what and when
to download (provided you _never_ select the MS (recommended) 'express'
option and choose 'custom' instead).

On my Win2k and XP systems I have observed that if I try to visit the
Windows Update website to manually download updates with Seamonkey or
Firefox I can't complete the download -- I have to run IE to do it,
even though it is not my browser of choice. I assume that if MS are to
produce a browser-agnostic version of Windows 7 for Europe they will
have to fix the upgrade site so that it works with non-MS browsers.
Does anyone know whether this issue has been addressed by the EU?

Another good question but, since I don't have the slightest interest in
win7, I neither care one way or the other and, therefore, have no
comment to offer ;-)
