Did my next door neighbours today. Dell Dimension 3000 with only 256Mb
ram and 39 of it's 40Gb hard drive full up, and an instruction from the
neighbour not to delete anything.

It's taken a combined total of about 12 hours, but I've managed to clean
it using a variety of tools, at first malwarebytes anti-malware would
not install, even in safe mode and even after renaming the .exe file.
Installed AVG free, let that run, then mbam installed okay. Also used
CCleaner, SPybot, SuperSpyware remover (from hirens bootcd). The hosts
file was the worst I'd ever seen, any attempt to go to any website
redirected to porn sites.

At first I did not connect it to my home network, I shut down all my NAS
drives and my own PC before connecting it to my router for downloading
updates.

I used a USB stick to transfer some files onto it, and then discovered
the USB stick had m.exe, autorun.inf etc put on it by the infected
machine.

This was the slowest and most infected machine I'd ever encountered.

Feeling quite pleased with myself now, so I am!

You might be pleased, but unless your neighbour stops clicking on
porn sites the problem will start all over again. Things don't just get
there on their own, people allow malware to be run.
I have NEVER had to clean ANY computer for friends or family in
all the years of dealing with computers. They don't install software
from porno sites and they all use
antivirus/firewall/anti-spyware/anti-malware
software. Regularly updated.
So you must know some right perverts, or people who think that by
"clicking here" will give them access to everything for free. It comes down
to whether the user is intelligent or not. If they are not, they end up
with a
computer like you describe. If they are normal intelligent people that do
not fall for scams all the time, they have a clean computer.
