I have an old (but good) scanner that I'd like to use on an XP pc.

It used to run on the old days :-) on an NT4 machine. It's one of
those scanners that sits between the pc parallel port and the printer.

The scanner itself has a D type connecters (male & female), so is kind
of daisy chained with the printer.

As there is no XP driver available for this scanner (UMAX Astra 1220P)

There are drivers that work under XP. You can connect and use it via a
parallel port. Two options

OR

Go to the HP site and download the drivers for the 3200C - It's the same
scanner and your 1220p should work OK under Windows XP

In case the newer computer doesn't have a parallel port, you'd have to buy a PCI or PCI-e parallel port card.
examples:

This is one of those places where a USB to parallel adapter cable usually doesn't work.
