I can ping 127.0.0.1 and the default gateway. I cannot ping any IP address on the internet. Any ideas what the problem is here?

Try running IPCONFIG /ALL in a command window. What is the default gateway? Are there DNS servers there, and can you ping them? You might like to post the results:
IPCONFIG /ALL > post-this.txt
